Why Cinco de Mayo is SO Important to the US?
- Battle of Puebla - 5th May 1862.
Most people think Cinco de Mayo is Mexican Independence Day, but it isn't.
That day falls on Sept 16. Cinco de Mayo celebrates the Battle of Puebla in 1862 when the city of Puebla defeated the French, who were on their way to Mexico City.
Important to the US because we were in the throes of the Civil War and the French were friendly to the Confederacy. Had they not lost at Puebla, had they helped the Confederacy, it may have taken a lot longer to end slavery in North America.
